{"id":762,"date":"2016-09-30T09:59:21","date_gmt":"2016-09-30T09:59:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mathesonmarcault.com\/?p=762"},"modified":"2016-12-06T14:39:53","modified_gmt":"2016-12-06T14:39:53","slug":"the-scientific-village-fete-at-new-scientist-live","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mathesonmarcault.com\/index.php\/2016\/09\/30\/the-scientific-village-fete-at-new-scientist-live\/","title":{"rendered":"The Scientific Village Fete at New Scientist Live"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>click through gallery above<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>From 22 to 25 September, we ran the Scientific Village Fete at <a href=\"https:\/\/live.newscientist.com\">New Scientist Live<\/a>, a four-day festival of ideas and discovery.<\/p>\n<p>Our\u00a0corner of the festival\u00a0invited passers-by to play traditional village-fete-style games &#8211; but with an astronomical twist.<\/p>\n<p>In the\u00a0<strong>Planet Shy<\/strong>, people threw balls coconut-shy style &#8211; but their aim was to knock down a scale model of the Solar System.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<strong>The Two-Body Problem<\/strong>, a classic demonstration of how gravity works became a head-to-head challenge, as groups of players rolled\u00a0<del>marbles<\/del> planets into orbit.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<strong>Space on Earth<\/strong>, a co-operative game created by <a href=\"http:\/\/saffronparker.com\">Saffron Parker<\/a>, players put their hands into simulated spacesuit gloves and had to try to screw on nuts and bolts and tie ropes together.<\/p>\n<p>And in game-show-style\u00a0<strong>So Wrong It&#8217;s Right<\/strong>, performers drew the crowds before challenging players to go head-to-head against the quirks of their own brain, with a challenge that used the Stroop Effect to\u00a0turn something quite simple (say seven random words) into a real challenge.<\/p>\n<p>The games drew thousands of players over four days &#8211; including real live astronaut Al Worden, shown playing here with Sumit Paul-Choudhury, the festival director (and editor-in-chief of New Scientist).<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-name\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/CtMwDKkXEAAksIK.jpg:large\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/h1>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>click through gallery above From 22 to 25 September, we ran the Scientific Village Fete at New Scientist Live, a four-day festival of ideas and discovery.
