As always there&#8217;s some open calls and conferences and games going on, but there&#8217;s also a\u00a0<em>lot\u00a0<\/em>of interesting writing around this month.<\/p>\n<h3>Open Calls<\/h3>\n<p>WordPlay is back in Toronto and <a href=\"http:\/\/handeyesociety.com\/event\/wordplay-2017-call-talk-game-submissions\/\"> has an open call out<\/a> for games and talks relating to the use of words in contemporary games. Games that are accepted for the showcase receive an artist fee of $80.<\/p>\n<div class=\"_4-u2 _2phz _4-u8\">And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gameonxp.com\/\">Game on! El arte en juego<\/a>, in Buenos Aires, also has a call out for an event to take place in December. The google form to submit a game is <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSe6wv-o44lO2hIio3TX9SEAoxqiJC6eKvrGf1vlKYCp3kkzSQ\/viewform\">here<\/a>. (No artist fee or travel support currently available, but past iterations of the event have obviously been <em>great)<\/em>.\u00a0They&#8217;re keen on experimental games, interactive playful objects, strange controllers and all sorts.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Conferences\u00a0and\u00a0Talks<\/h3>\n<p>Come along for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.museumoflondon.org.uk\/museum-london\/event-detail?id=116009\">The London Salon: Playing Out<\/a> at the Museum of London on 8 August (that&#8217;s TOMORROW). There&#8217;ll be three speakers discussing play in the city, including Matt Adams from Blast Theory, and also me (Holly). Plus we&#8217;ll be running a tiny new game called Pop-Up City.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re interested in games and libraries, then 12 August sees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bl.uk\/events\/game-library-camp\">Game Library Camp<\/a> at the British Library &#8211; free, but registration required. It&#8217;s aimed primarily at librarians but anyone interested in libraries (and on this occasion, games in libraries) is welcome.<\/p>\n<p>The V&amp;A has announced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/blog\/network\/parallel-worlds-2017\">Parallel Worlds<\/a> for 30 September. Last year&#8217;s was\u00a0<em>great<\/em>, and also sold out, so worth getting a ticket early if you&#8217;re keen to go. Speakers for this year include Tim Hunkin of the amazing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.novelty-automation.com\/\">Novelty Automation<\/a> in Holborn, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youandpea.com\/\">You+Pea<\/a> with\u00a0their intriguing stuff at the games\/architecture overlap, and Sharna Jackson of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weareseahorse.com\/\">Seahorse<\/a> and about nine million super-neat projects that combine technology and play for children in interesting ways.<\/p>\n<p>And Watershed&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.watershed.co.uk\/whatson\/8241\/making-the-city-playable\/\">Making the City Playable<\/a>\u00a0conference is on in 19 October (in Bristol), and will <em>clearly<\/em> be great. They&#8217;re slowly announcing more speakers.<\/p>\n<h3>Exhibitions<\/h3>\n<p>Bar SK in Melbourne is currently showing an exhibition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/447651058951557\">celebrate the launch of new studio Play Reactive<\/a>.\u00a0And here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/artechouse.com\/?exhibition=xyzt-abstract-landscapes\">nice writeup<\/a> of XYZT: Abstract Landscapes, an exhibition of interactive &#8220;digital landscapes&#8221; by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/artechouse.com\/?artwork-artists=am-cb\">Adrien M &amp; Claire B<\/a>\u00a0currently showing in Washington DC.<\/p>\n<p>Some exhibitions that are still running since the last time we wrote one of these roundups: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museumoflondon.org.uk\/museum-london\/whats-on\/exhibitions\/time-play\">Time to Play<\/a>\u00a0at the Museum of London; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.craftscouncil.org.uk\/what-we-do\/states-of-play\/\">States of Play<\/a>\u00a0in Hull, which &#8220;shows how play shapes our lives and the world around us&#8221;,\u00a0with sixteen different games including new commissions;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freud.org.uk\/exhibitions\/76889\/play-at-the-freud-museum-london\/\">\u00a0play and psychoanalysis at the Freud Museum<\/a>; and in Milan,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.triennale.org\/en\/design_museum\/tdm10-giro-giro-tondo-design-for-children\/\">Giro Giro Tondo: Design for Children<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Festivals and Events<\/h3>\n<p>Freeplay in Melbourne has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freeplay.net.au\/a-very-freeplay-update-new-director-and-suite-of-events-for-2017-18\/\">appointed Chad Toprak as its new director<\/a>, and announced that there&#8217;ll be a festival in the first half of 2018. In the mean time, from August 15-27, Freeplay and the team who ran Contours last year will be putting on <a href=\"http:\/\/contours-exhibition.com\/\">Contours 2017<\/a>, a\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;mixtape exhibition of contemporary Australian videogames&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Up in Edinburgh, it&#8217;s currently time for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.assemblyfestival.com\/futureplay\">Futureplay<\/a>\u00a0(until 26 August) &#8211; a load of games and\u00a0<em>stuff\u00a0<\/em>including &#8220;a virtual reality studio, a gaming and interactive tech zone, an immersive art gallery, a black box theatre, food stalls and a bar&#8221;. There are some great games there, plus talks, performances, and installations, and also it&#8217;s in a <em>series of geodesic domes<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>Things to Read<\/h3>\n<p>White Noise, a West London publication about cities and people, has been having\u00a0a &#8220;month of play&#8221;. There&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitenoise.city\/articles\/small-dust-spaces-singapore-playgrounds\">a look at a wonderful project documenting playgrounds in Singapore<\/a>. There&#8217;s the idea of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitenoise.city\/articles\/play-and-its-traces\">play marks<\/a>&#8220;, the traces left behind by play, in White City Adventure Playground. There&#8217;s Darran Anderson on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitenoise.city\/articles\/let-them-have-playgrounds\">history of playgrounds<\/a>\u00a0and their role in a city. Just have a look at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitenoise.city\/tags\/play\">all of it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gamestudies.org\/1701\/articles\/justgames\">Game Studies has announced<\/a> that it now welcomes writing about non-digital games, which is neat! Of course, <a href=\"http:\/\/analoggamestudies.org\/\">Analog Game Studies<\/a>\u00a0also exists and is full of essays about the physical side of games &#8211; most recently:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Miguel Sicart on <a href=\"http:\/\/analoggamestudies.org\/2017\/07\/queering-the-controller\/\">Queering the Controller<\/a>. <em>&#8220;<\/em><em>The architecture of control is one of limits, of predesigned possible actions. Our hands are limited to the prehensile capacities of the fingers. Controllers provide input, but it is the eye that processes the feedback. In everything else, the controller provides input for the eye to understand. The body becomes a provider of instructions, an instrument for the mind, which is the executor of actions and the processor of results. The body is but an appendix to the controller, a medium between the mind and the machine.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Dan Gardner, Joshua Tanenbaum and Michael Cowling on <a href=\"http:\/\/analoggamestudies.org\/2017\/07\/2716\/\">Exercise for Teaching Pervasive Game Design<\/a>. <em>&#8220;Chalk is a\u00a0<\/em>permissive<em>\u00a0medium, affording experimentation and risk taking. Chalk is also a\u00a0<\/em>performative<em>\u00a0medium for design, because the student must undertake the design in full view of potential spectators and players. The act of altering a public space \u2013 even temporarilly and nondestructively \u2013 implies some defiance towards the normative uses of that space.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Peter McDonald <a href=\"http:\/\/analoggamestudies.org\/2017\/07\/the-impossible-reversal-george-brechts-playfulness-in-deck-a-fluxgame\/\">on Brecht&#8217;s Deck: A Fluxgame<\/a>. \u00a0<em>&#8220;The sixty-four cards have neither suit nor number and, despite the suggestion of divisibility into eight groups of eight or four groups of sixteen, clear categories are wanting. The meaning of each individual card is a mystery. The collages often seem to generate thematic associations or visual puns, but they simultaneously resist such interpretations. Instead of looking for an interpreter, the cards need to be handled, to be spread out on a table and piled up, to be shuffled and dealt. The game includes no instructions, rules, or goals, and only the work\u2019s title and materials suggests it is a game at all. Yet, the cards ask to be played with, even without any explanation of what that means.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sebastian Deterding&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/1555412017721086\">Alibis for Adult Play<\/a>\u00a0looks at the different excuses that adults use to frame playful behaviour that they might feel is inappropriate for its own sake. <em>&#8220;Adults routinely provide alternative, adult-appropriate motives to account for their play, such as child care, professional duties, creative expression, or health. Once legitimized, the norms and rules of play themselves then provide an alibi for behavior that would risk being embarrassing outside play.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And finally, Hannah Nicklin&#8217;s made an ebook bundle of <a href=\"http:\/\/hannahnicklin.bigcartel.com\/product\/digital-zine-bundle-all-the-zine\">all her zines<\/a>\u00a0(including\u00a0&#8220;The Psychogeography of Games&#8221; and &#8220;Hannah and the Klondikes&#8221; which is available for \u00a35.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s August!
